He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG, with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He was admitted to Inner Temple entitled to practise as a barrister.1 He was British Consul to Erzerum in 1859.1 He was British Consul to Jassy in 1862.1 He was British Consul to Rustchuk between 1865 and 1879.1 He succeeded as the 8th Baronet Dalyell [N.S., 1685] on 16 February 1865.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Linlithgowshire.1 On his death, his baronetcy became dormant until 1914.1
