     He gained the rank of Captain in the West Yorkshire Regiment.¹ He was educated at Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey, England^G.¹ He graduated from Magdalen College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England^G, in 1898 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)¹ Between 1905 and 1910 he played 14 cricket test matches for England, 5 as captain.² He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches.¹ He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.)¹

     Edna Mary Meads was the daughter of Henry James Meads.¹ She married Frederick Luther Fane, son of Colonel Frederick John Fane and Annie Louisa Abbott, on 19 September 1938.¹ She died in 1982.¹
     From 19 September 1938, her married name became Fane.¹
