He gained the rank of Captain in the West Yorkshire Regiment.1 He was educated at Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey, EnglandG.1 He graduated from Magdalen College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, in 1898 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)1 Between 1905 and 1910 he played 14 cricket test matches for England, 5 as captain.2 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.)1
