He was commissioned in 1797, in the service of the Royal Navy.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Aberdeenshire between 1820 and 1854.1 He held the office of Lord of the Admiralty between 1841 and 1846.1 He was Commander–in-Chief of the the Nore between 1854 and 1857.1
