     William d’Arcy Derwent Ussher was born on 20 April 1906.¹ He is the son of Lancelot Herbert Ussher and Emily Mabel Brownell.¹ He married Anne Boggis-Rolfe, daughter of Douglass Horace Boggis-Rolfe, on 18 December 1935.¹
     He was educated at Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey, England^G.¹ He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England^G, with a Master of Arts (M.A.)¹ He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England^G, with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.)¹ He was admitted to Lincoln’s Inn in 1929 entitled to practise as a Barrister-at-law.¹ He was admitted to Advocate of the Supreme Court of South Africa in 1930.¹ He was Judge-Advocate with the Royal Air Force uring the Second World War.¹ He lived in 1976 at 26 Pallinghurst Road, Westcliff, Johannesburg, Transvaal, South Africa^G.¹
