     He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in dispatches and was wounded.¹ He gained the rank of Captain in the Australian Infantry.¹ He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.)¹

     Marie Isobel Ward was the daughter of Samuel Cowper Ward.¹ She married Captain William Russell de la Poer Beresford, son of Arthur George de la Poer Beresford and Ellen Stuart Mayo, on 25 February 1922 at St. Peters, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia.^1,2 She died on 19 December 1944.¹
