     He was a coal miner circa 1853 at Preston, Lancashire, EnglandG.3 He was a bridge builder in 1871 at Rakaia, Canterbury, New ZealandG, He helped to construct the first wooden bridge over the Rakaia River..4 Benjamin, Sarah and James and Sarah Jane Hampton immigrated to Lyttelton, Canterbury, New ZealandG, on the ship Charlotte Jane, arriving on January 1871.3 He was a farmer after 1871 at Preston Farm, Newlands, Canterbury, New ZealandG, His farm was 900 acres..3

     Benjamin, Sarah and James and Benjamin Hampton immigrated to Lyttelton, Canterbury, New ZealandG, on the ship Charlotte Jane, arriving on January 1871.4
