Matthew Blood-Smyth1 
He was born with the name of Matthew Blood.1 He gained the rank of Ensign in 1778 in the 57th Foot.1,2 He fought in the Battle of Yorktown, during which he was captured.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1782 in the 57th Foot, which he sold to an Ensign of the 22nd Foot in 1784.2 On 15 December 1808 his name was legally changed to Matthew Blood-Smyth when he assumed the additional surname and arms of Smyth by Royal Licence.1 He lived at Castle Fergus, County Clare, IrelandG.1
