     He was educated at University College School, London, England^G.² He was commissioned in 1891 with the rank of Trooper, in the service of the 11th (Prince Albert’s Own) Hussars.² He gained the rank of Trooper in 1896 in the Matabele Relief Force.² He fought in the Siege of Mafeking, where he lost his arm.² He gained the rank of Sergeant in July 1899 in the C Squadron, Protectorate Regiment.² He was awarded the Victoria Cross (V.C.) on 6 July 1900.^1,2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1906 in the Durban Militia Reserves.² He lived at Durban, Natal, South Africa^G.¹ He fought in the First World War, serving in Egypt and Gallipoli.² He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the Otago Regiment, New Zealand Expeditionary Force.²

     Denis Raymond Pack-Beresford was born on 5 September 1934.¹ He is the son of Commander Denis John Pack-Beresford and Daphne Martineau.¹ He married Carolyn Anne Ryan, daughter of Gerald C. Ryan, on 12 January 1967.¹ He and Carolyn Anne Ryan were divorced.¹
