He gained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the 10th Battalion (South Australian), Australian Imperial Forces.2 He fought in the First World War.2 He was awarded the Victoria Cross (V.C.), 23 July 1916.2 He fought in the Second World War between 1939 and 1942, when he was captured in Java and became a POW.2 He gained the rank of Brigadier in February 1942 in the ‘Black Force’, Java.2 He was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 1946.2
