     George Paulet, 12th Marquess of Winchester was born on 7 June 1722.¹ He was the son of Norton Paulet and Jane Morley.¹ He married Martha Ingoldsby, daughter of Thomas Ingoldsby and Anne Limbrey, on 7 January 1762.¹ He died on 22 April 1800 at age 77.¹
     He held the office of Gentleman Usher to the Prince of Wales in 1750.¹ He held the office of Groom Porter to HM King George II in 1757.¹ He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for Winchester between 1765 and 1774.¹ He was 1st Commissioner of the Lieutenancy of Hampshire between 1793 and 1798.¹ He succeeded as the 12th Baron St. John [E., 1539] on 24 December 1794.¹ He succeeded as the 12th Earl of Wiltshire [E., 1550] on 24 December 1794.¹ He succeeded as the 12th Marquess of Winchester [E., 1551] on 24 December 1794.¹ He held the office of Vice-Admiral of Hampshire in 1797.¹

     Martha Ingoldsby was the daughter of Thomas Ingoldsby and Anne Limbrey.^1,2 She married George Paulet, 12th Marquess of Winchester, son of Norton Paulet and Jane Morley, on 7 January 1762.¹ She died on 14 March 1796.¹
     From 7 January 1762, her married name became Paulet. After her marriage, Martha Ingoldsby was styled as Marchioness of Winchester on 24 December 1794.

     Thomas Ingoldsby is the son of Richard Ingoldsby and Mary Colemore.² He married Anne Limbrey, daughter of John Limbrey.²
     He held the office of Sheriff of Buckinghamshire.²

     Charles Ingoldsby Paulet, 13th Marquess of Winchester was born on 27 January 1764.¹ He was the son of George Paulet, 12th Marquess of Winchester and Martha Ingoldsby.¹ He married Anne Andrews, daughter of John Andrews, on 21 July 1800.¹ He died on 29 November 1843 at age 79.¹
     He was given the name of Charles Ingoldsby Paulet at birth.¹ He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.¹ He was educated at Clare Hall, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England^G.¹ He gained the rank of Ensign between 1784 and 1786 in the 1st Foot Guards.¹ He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Truro between 1792 and 1796.¹ He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1796 in the North Hampshire Militia.¹ He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire between 1798 and 1800.¹ He succeeded as the 13th Baron St. John [E., 1539] on 22 April 1800.¹ He succeeded as the 13th Earl of Wiltshire [E., 1550] on 22 April 1800.¹ He succeeded as the 13th Marquess of Winchester [E., 1551] on 22 April 1800.¹ He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1812.¹ On 8 August 1839 his name was legally changed to Charles Ingoldsby Burroughs-Paulet by Royal Licence, under the terms of the will of Dame Sarah Salusbury.¹ He held the office of Groom of the Stole.¹

     Anne Andrews was the daughter of John Andrews.¹ She married Charles Ingoldsby Paulet, 13th Marquess of Winchester, son of George Paulet, 12th Marquess of Winchester and Martha Ingoldsby, on 21 July 1800.¹ She died on 21 March 1841.¹
     After her marriage, Anne Andrews was styled as Marchioness of Winchester on 21 July 1800. From 21 July 1800, her married name became Paulet.

     John Andrews lived at Shotley Hall, Northumberland, England^G.¹

     General Henry Montagu, 6th Baron Rokeby was born on 2 February 1798.¹ He was the son of Matthew Montagu, 4th Baron Rokeby and Elizabeth Charlton.¹ He married Magdalen Hurley, daughter of Lt.-Col. Thomas Hurley and Mary Dallas, on 18 December 1826.¹ He died on 25 May 1883 at age 85.¹
     He gained the rank of Ensign in 1814 in the 3rd Regiment Foot Guards.¹ He fought in the Battle of Quatre Bras on 16 June 1815.¹ He fought in the Battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815.¹ He succeeded as the 6th Baron Rokeby, of Armagh [I., 1777] on 7 April 1847.¹ He succeeded as the 8th Baronet Robinson [G.B., 1730] on 7 April 1847.¹ He fought in the Crimean War in 1854.¹ He gained the rank of Major-General in 1854.¹ He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1854 in the Scots Guards.¹ He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1856.¹ He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1861.¹ He gained the rank of General in 1869.¹ He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) in 1875.¹

     Augustus John Henry Beaumont Paulet, 15th Marquess of Winchester was born on 6 February 1858.¹ He was the son of John Paulet, 14th Marquess of Winchester and Hon. Mary Montagu.¹ He died on 11 December 1899 at age 41 at Maggersfontein, South Africa^G, killed in action.¹
     He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.¹ He gained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in 1879 in the Coldstream Guards.¹ He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1881.¹ He fought in the Suakin Campaign in 1885.¹ He succeeded as the 15th Earl of Wiltshire [E., 1550] on 4 July 1887.¹ He succeeded as the 15th Baron St. John [E., 1539] on 4 July 1887.¹ He succeeded as the 15th Marquess of Winchester [E., 1551] on 4 July 1887.¹ He gained the rank of Captain in 1890.¹ He gained the rank of Major in 1897.¹ He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Hampshire.¹ He fought in the Boer War.¹

     Henry William Montagu Paulet, 16th Marquess of Winchester was born on 30 October 1862. He was the son of John Paulet, 14th Marquess of Winchester and Hon. Mary Montagu.¹ He married, firstly, Charlotte Josephine Howard, daughter of Colonel John Stanley Howard, on 23 February 1892.¹ He married, secondly, Caroline Hoffnung, daughter of Abraham Hoffnung, on 19 January 1925.¹ He married, thirdly, Bapsy Pavry, daughter of Most Rev. Khurshedji Erachji Pavry, on 2 July 1952.¹ He died on 28 June 1962 at age 99.¹
     He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion, Hampshire Regiment.¹ He succeeded as the 16th Earl of Wiltshire [E., 1550] on 11 December 1899.¹ He succeeded as the 16th Baron St. John [E., 1539] on 11 December 1899.¹ He succeeded as the 16th Marquess of Winchester [E., 1551] on 11 December 1899.¹ He gained the rank of Captain between 1902 and 1905 in the Imperial Yeomanry.¹ He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire between 1904 and 1917.¹ He gained the rank of Major in the 13th Battlaion, Rigle Brigade.¹ He fought in the First World War.¹

     Lady Catherine Margaret Powlett was born in 1766.³ She was the daughter of Admiral Harry Powlett, 6th Duke of Bolton and Katherine Lowther.^1,4 She married William Henry Vane, 1st Duke of Cleveland, son of Henry Vane, 2nd Earl of Darlington and Margaret Lowther, on 17 September 1787 at Hackwood, Hampshire, England^G.⁵ She died on 17 June 1807 at Cleveland House, 16 St. James’s Square, Westminster, London, England^G.³
     Her married name became Vane. After her marriage, Lady Catherine Margaret Powlett was styled as Countess of Darlington on 8 September 1792.
     Lady St. Helier writes that “she was agreeable, and on the whole, kind, but she was very sarcastic and intolerant; and on the slightest deviation from what she considered the laws of good society, she never scrupled to give her opinion, and that in a very unpleasant manner.”⁶ Sir Horace Rumbold agreed with this view, writing that she was “kindness itself to those who were so fortunate as to be in her good graces, and the truest and most unflinching of friends.”⁶
