He was educated at St. Andrews University, St. Andrews, Fife, ScotlandG.1 He was commissioned in 1804, in the service of the Bengal Horse Artillery.1 He retired from the military in 1834.1 He was the Provost between 1842 and 1861 at St. Andrews University, St. Andrews, Fife, ScotlandG.1 He was appointed Knight Bachelor in 1856.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by St. Andrews University, St. Andrews, Fife, ScotlandG, in 1856.1 He revived the Roal and Ancient Golf Club at St. Andrews.1
