He was educated at Oriel College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.1 He gained the rank of Captain in 1803 in the Warwickshire Yeomanry Cavalry.1 He held the office of a Lord of the Bedchamber between 1804 and 1815.1 He gained the rank of Major in 1807.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1814.1 He held the office of High Sheriff of Warwickshire between 1817 and 1818.1 He succeeded as the 16th Lord Willoughby de Broke [E., 1491] on 1 September 1820.2 He succeeded as the 23rd Lord Latimer, of Corby [E., 1299] on 1 September 1820, de jure.1 He succeeded as the 24th Lord Latimer, of Corby [E., 1290] on 1 September 1820, de jure.1

He was given the name of Robert John Barnard at birth.1 He succeeded as the 25th Lord Latimer, of Corby [E., 1290] on 16 December 1852, de jure.2 He succeeded as the 17th Lord Willoughby de Broke [E., 1491] on 16 December 1852.2 He succeeded as the 24th Lord Latimer, of Corby [E., 1299] on 16 December 1852, de jure.2 On 17 May 1853 his name was legally changed to Robert John Verney by Royal Licence.1
