Frederic Leighton, 1st and last Baron Leighton was born on 3 December 1830.1 He was the son of Frederick Septimus Leighton and Augusta Susan Nash.1 He died on 25 January 1896 at age 65, unmarried.1
In 1855 he exhibited his first picture at the Royal Academy.1 He was appointed Knight Bachelor in 1878 at Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He held the office of President of the Royal Academy between 1878 and 1896.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.) by Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by Dublin University, Dublin, County Dublin, IrelandG.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.1 He gained the rank of Honorary Colonel in the Artists’ Rifles Volunteers.1 He was created 1st Baronet Leighton [U.K.] on 11 February 1886.1 He was created 1st Baron Leighton, of Stretton, co. Salop [U.K.] on 24 January 1896.1 On his death, his titles became extinct.1
