Field Marshal Richard Boyle, 2nd Viscount Shannon was born circa 1675.1 He was the son of Hon. Richard Boyle and Elizabeth Ponsonby.1 He married, firstly, Mary Sackville, daughter of Charles Sackville, 6th Earl of Dorset, on 6 June 1704.3,4 He married, secondly, Grace Senhouse, daughter of John Senhouse and Jane Lamplugh, in January 1720/21.1 He died on 20 December 1740 at Ashley Park, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, England, without male issue.3,4 He was buried at St. Mary’s Parish Church, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, EnglandG.5,4
He fought in the Battle of Landen on 29 July 1693 [O.S. 19 Juuly 1693].6 He succeeded as the 2nd Viscount Shannon, co. Limerick [I., 1660] circa April 1699.1 He gained the rank of Brigadier-Geenral on 25 August 1704.6 He gained the rank of Major-General on 1 January 1706/7.6 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Arundel between 1708 and 1710.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General on 1 January 1708/9.6 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for East Grinstead between 1722 and 1734.1 He held the office of Lord Justice [Ireland] from 1722 to 1723.6 He held the office of Governor of Sheerness.6 He was Commander-in-Chief of the Ireland between 1727 and 1740.1 He was Colonel of the 4th Troop of Horse from March 1726/27 to 1740.1 He held the office of Lord Justice [Ireland] in 1734.6 He gained the rank of General on 27 August 1735.6 He held the office of Governor of Portsmouth between 1737 and 1740.6 He gained the rank of Field Marshal on 2 July 1739.6
On his death, his peerage became extinct.5
