On 21 November 1780 his name was legally changed to William Forward on inheriting the estate of his maternal relatives.1 In 1789 his name was legally changed to William Howard by Royal Licence.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Viscount Wicklow, of co. Wicklow [I., 1785] on 26 June 1789.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Earl of Wicklow [I., 1793] on 26 June 1789.2 He succeeded as the 3rd Baron Clonmore, of Clonmore Castle, co. Carlow [I., 1776] on 26 June 1789.1
