He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.)4 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.)4 He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.2 He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1897 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)2 He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1901 with a Master of Arts (M.A.)2 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) in 1902.2 He succeeded as the 4th Baron Rayleigh of Terling Place, co. Essex [U.K., 1821] on 30 June 1919.2 He was awarded the Rumford Medal of the Royal Society in 1920.2 He was Professor of Physics at College of Science, South Kensington, London, England.4 He was president of the British Association in 1938.2 He was president of the Royal Society in 1945.2

Cosmo George Gordon, 3rd Duke of Gordon was born on 27 April 1720.3 He was the son of Alexander Gordon, 2nd Duke of Gordon and Lady Henrietta Mordaunt.1 He married Lady Catherine Gordon, daughter of William Gordon, 2nd Earl of Aberdeen and Lady Susan Murray, on 3 September 1741 at Dunkeld, Perthshire, ScotlandG.4,3 He died on 5 August 1752 at age 32 at Bretueil, FranceG.4,3
