He succeeded as the 10th Earl of Caithness [S., 1455] on 9 December 1765.2 On 28 November 1768 he was served heir, although an unsuccessful counterclaim was advanced by a great-grandson of David Sinclair of Broinach, brother of the 8th Earl (it appeared that the latter’s line was illegitimate, however) and his claim to the Earldom was allowed 2 May 1772.1

Lt.-Col. John Sinclair, 11th Earl of Caithness1 
He was commissioned in 1772.3 He fought in the American War of Independence, and was wounded at the siege of Charlestown.1 He gained the rank of Major in 1777 in the 76th Foot.3 He succeeded as the 11th Earl of Caithness [S., 1455] on 29 November 1779.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1783 in the 76th Foot.3
