He was given the name of Joseph William Alexander Sloss at birth.3 He was educated at Bangor, County Down, IrelandG.3 He was with the Royal Navy between 1944 and 1945.3 He gained the rank of Sub-Lieutenant in 1946 in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve.3 He graduated from Hertford College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, in 1951 with a Master of Arts (M.A.)3 He was admitted to Gray’s Inn in 1952 entitled to practise as a Barrister-at-Law.3 On 3 August 1971 his name was legally changed to Joseph William Alexander Butler-Sloss by Deed Poll.3 He held the office of Recorder of the Crown Court between 1972 and 1984.2 He lived in 1976 at Downham’s Cottage, Woodbury Salterton, Exeter, Devon, EnglandG.3 He held the office of Judge of the High Court of Kenya between 1984 and 1990.2 He was chairman of the Delimitation Commission, Botswana from 1992 to 1993.2
