Field Marshal John Colborne, 1st Baron Seaton of Seaton was born on 16 February 1778 at Lyndhurst, Hampshire, EnglandG.1 He was the son of Samuel Colborne and Cordelia Anne Garstin.3 He married Elizabeth Yonge, daughter of Reverend John Yonge and Elizabeth Duke, on 21 June 1814.4 He died on 17 April 1863 at age 85 at Torquay, Devon, EnglandG.1
He was educated at Christ’s Hospital, London, EnglandG.3 He was educated at Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire, EnglandG.3 He was commissioned on 10 July 1794 with the rank of Ensign, in the service of the 20th Foot.5 He fought in the Battle of Maida on 4 July 1806.5 He fought in the Battle of Corunna on 16 January 1809.5 He fought in the Battle of Busaco on 26 September 1810.5 He fought in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, where he commanded the 52nd Light Infantry.5,4 He gained the rank of Colonel in the 2nd Life Guards.4 He held the office of Lieutenant-Governor of Guernsey in 1825.5 He held the office of Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada between 4 November 1828 and 24 January 1836.5 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.)3 He was Commander of the Forces in Ireland.4 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General on 28 June 1838.5 He held the office of Governor-General of Canada between January 1839 and October 1839.5 He was created 1st Baron Seaton of Seaton, co. Devon [U.K.] on 14 December 1839.5 He held the office of Lord High Commissioner in the Ionian Islands between 1843 and 1849.5 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Hanoverian Order (G.C.H.)3 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of St. Michael and St. George (G.C.M.G.)3 He gained the rank of Field Marshal on 1 April 1860.5
