He was educated at Haileybury College, Haileybury, Hertfordshire, EnglandG.1 He gained the rank of Major-General in the G.O.C. forces in South Africa.1 He fought in the Boer War.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1914 in the 1st Battalion, Connaught Rangers.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1915.1

He was educated at Haileybury College, Haileybury, Hertfordshire, EnglandG.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the Indian Staff Corps.1 Burkes Landed Gentry states he was awarded the Victoria Cross (V.C.) posthumously, for saving one of his men on the march to Kandahar. However, this award is not mentioned in Arthur’s Symbol of Courage.1
