He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He was commissioned in 1932, in the service of the Black Watch.1 He fought in the Second World War, where he was wounded and mentioned in despatches.1 He was appointed Member, Order of the British Empire (M.B.E.) in 1942.1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1944.1 He was commander of the 5th Battalion, Black Watch between 1944 and 1946.1 He was awarded the Companion, Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1945 bar.1 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.)1 He was commander of the 2nd Battalion, Black Watch between 1953 and 1956.1 He was admitted to Member, Royal Company of Archers.1 He retired from the military in 1959.1
