James Ogilvy, 1st Earl of Airlie1
He succeeded as the 7th Lord Ogilvy of Airlie [S., 1491] between 1616 and 1618.1 He was created 1st Earl of Airlie [Scotland] on 2 April 1639.1 He was created 1st Lord Ogilvy of Alith and Lintrathen, co. Forfar [Scotland] on 2 April 1639.1 In July 1640 the Marquess of Argyll raided and devasted James Ogilvy’s lands and burnt his castle, leaving him “in all his lands not a cock to crow day.”1 He fought in the Battle of Kilsyth on 15 August 1645, where he greatly distinguished himself in the victory against the Covenanters.1 On 11 July 1646 he was excepted from pardon by the Articles of Westminster.1 On 27 July 1646 he was excommunicated by the General Assembly.1 On 17 March 1647 his ‘forefaultour’ was rescinded.1
