Lt.-Col. Sir Henry Galway ²

     Lt.-Col. Sir Henry Lionel Galway was born on 25 September 1859 at Alverstoke, Hampshire, England.² He was the son of Lt.-Gen. Sir Thomas Lionel John Gallwey and Alicia Dorinda MacDougall.^1,2 He married Marie Carola Franciska Roselyne Blennerhassett, daughter of Rt. Hon. Sir Rowland Blennerhassett, 4th Bt. and Countess Charlotte de Leyden, on 26 August 1913.¹ He died on 17 June 1949 at age 89.¹
     He was given the name of Henry Lionel Gallwey at birth.¹ He was educated at Cheltenham College, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England^G.² He was educated at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire, England.² He was Deputy Commissioner and Vice Consul to the Oil Rivers Protectorate in 1891.² He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1896.¹ He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1899.² He held the office of Governor of St. Helena between 1902 and 1911.² He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of St. Michael and St. George (K.C.M.G.) in 1910.¹ In 1911 his name was legally changed to Henry Lionel Galway.² He held the office of Governor of Gambia between 1911 and 1914.² He held the office of Governor of South Australia between 1914 and 1920.²
