Peerage Record – 1668

     Archibald Campbell, 7th Earl of Argyll was born in 1575.¹ He was the son of Colin Campbell, 6th Earl of Argyll and Lady Anne Keith.³ He married, firstly, Lady Agnes Douglas, daughter of William Douglas, 6th Earl of Morton and Lady Agnes Leslie, on 24 July 1592.⁴ He married, secondly, Anne Cornwallis, daughter of Sir William Cornwallis and Lucy Neville, on 30 November 1610 at St. Botolph’s, Bishopsgate, London, England^G.⁵ He died between 9 October 1638 and 29 November 1638 at London, England^G.⁵ His will was proven (by probate) on 29 November 1638.⁵
     He succeeded as the 8th Lord Campbell [S., 1445] on 10 September 1584.¹ He succeeded as the 7th Earl of Argyll [S., 1457] on 10 September 1584.¹ He succeeded as the 7th Lord Lorne [S., 1470] on 10 September 1584.¹ He fought in the Battle of Glenlivat on 3 October 1594, where he was completely defeated by the Catholic Lords, Huntly and Erroll.⁵ He held the office of Justice-General [Scotland].³ In 1617 after expelling the Macdonalds of Kintyre, he received a grant of the whole of that Lordship and the island of Jura.⁴ In 1618 he served under Philip III of Spain against Holland.⁴ In 1618 he became a Roman Catholic.⁴ On 16 February 1618/19 at Market Cross, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland^G, he was declared a rebel and traitor.⁴ On 22 November 1621 his sentence was reversed.⁴ His last will was dated 9 October 1638. He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.⁶
     

     Jeannie Sinclair Hamilton was the daughter of Robert Hamilton.¹ She married John Campbell Arbuthnott, son of Lt.-Col. Hon. Hugh Arbuthnott and Susannah Morrison Campbell, on 21 July 1887.² She died on 3 April 1947.²
     From 21 July 1887, her married name became Arbuthnott.¹

     Sir William Sandys was born circa 1575.² He was the son of Sir Walter Sandys and Lady Mabel Wriothesley.² He married Elizabeth Cornwallis, daughter of Sir William Cornwallis and Lucy Neville, in 1592.¹ He died on 28 October 1628.²
     He was appointed Knight on 22 July 1601.² He held the office of High Sheriff of Hampshire from 1611 to 1612.² He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Winchester in 1614.²

     Richard Lumley, 1st Viscount Lumley of Waterford was baptised on 7 April 1589.² He was the son of Roger Lumley and Anne Kurtwich.² He married, firstly, Frances Shelley, daughter of Henry Shelley and Barbara Cromer.² He married, secondly, Elizabeth Cornwallis, daughter of Sir William Cornwallis and Lucy Neville, on 11 May 1630.¹ He died before 12 March 1662/63.²
     He was appointed Knight in 1616.² He was created 1st Viscount Lumley of Waterford [Ireland] on 12 July 1628.² He garrisoned Lumley Castle for the King during the Civil War.² He was a Royalist commander in the West of England at the time of Britsol’s capitulation to Parliament in 1645.²

     Sir Edmond Withipole married Frances Cornwallis, daughter of Sir William Cornwallis and Lucy Neville.¹ He died on 6 November 1619.¹
     He was appointed Knight in January 1599/0.¹

     Sir William Withipole was the son of Sir Edmond Withipole and Frances Cornwallis.² He married Jane Stanhope, daughter of Sir Michael Stanhope and Anne Reade, on 25 April 1621.¹ He died on 11 August 1645.²
     He was also known as Sir William Withypoole.³ He was appointed Knight in 1617.² He lived at Christ Church, Ipswich, Suffolk, England^G.²

     Jane Stanhope was the daughter of Sir Michael Stanhope and Anne Reade.¹ She married, firstly, Henry Radcliffe, Viscount Fitzwalter, son of Robert Radcliffe, 5th Earl of Sussex, before 1621.¹ She married, secondly, Sir William Withipole, son of Sir Edmond Withipole and Frances Cornwallis, on 25 April 1621.¹
     From before 1621, her married name became Radcliffe.¹ Her married name became Withipole.

     Henry Radcliffe, Viscount Fitzwalter was born circa 1598.¹ He was the son of Robert Radcliffe, 5th Earl of Sussex. He married Jane Stanhope, daughter of Sir Michael Stanhope and Anne Reade, before 1621.² He died on 30 November 1621, without issue.³
     He was styled as Viscount Fitzwalter between 1598 and 1621.¹

     Edmund Withipole was born circa 1633.¹ He was the son of Sir William Withipole and Jane Stanhope.¹ He died circa March 1634, as an infant.¹ He was buried on 3 March 1634.¹

     Elizabeth Withipole was the daughter of Sir William Withipole and Jane Stanhope.^1,2 She married Leicester Devereux, 6th Viscount Hereford, son of Sir Walter Devereux, 5th Viscount Hereford and Elizabeth Knightley, on 6 June 1642.² She died circa January 1669.¹ She was buried on 27 January 1669.¹
     She was also known as Elizabeth Withypoole.² From 6 June 1642, her married name became Devereux. After her marriage, Elizabeth Withipole was styled as Viscountess Hereford in January 1658.
