He was educated at Cheltenham College, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, EnglandG.3 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the 56th and 24th Regiments.2 He fought in the Crimean War between 1854 and 1855.2 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for County Carlow.2 He succeeded as the 10th Baronet Butler, of Cloughgrenan, co. Carlow [I., 1628] on 22 November 1862.2 He held the office of High Sheriff of County Carlow in 1866.2 He held the office of Vice-Lord-Lieutenant of County Carlow.2 He gained the rank of Honorary Colonel in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps.2
