He was educated at Cheltenham College, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, EnglandG.3 He explored the Pacific and Atlantic in a small boat.3 Between 1934 and 1937 he commanded the ship transporting the Rymill expedition to Antartica.3 He was awarded the Polar Medal.3 He fought in the Second World War, where he was mentioned in despatches four times.4 He fought in the St. Nazaire Raid on 27 March 1942, where he commanded H.M.S. Campbeltown.4 He was awarded the Victoria Cross (V.C.) on 21 May 1942, for his actions on 27-28 March 1942.1,4 He was awarded the Croix de Guerre.3 He gained the rank of Captain in the Royal Navy.1 He was awarded the Chevalier, Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Merton and Morden between February 1950 and May 1955.3
