     William Armstrong, Baron Armstrong of Sanderstead was born on 3 March 1915 at Clapton, London, England^G.¹ He was the son of William Armstrong and Priscilla Hopkins.¹ He married Gwendoline Enid Bennett, daughter of John Bennett, in 1942.¹ He died on 12 July 1980 at age 65 at Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England^G.¹
     He was educated at Bec School, Tooting, Surrey, England^G.¹ He was educated at Exeter College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England^G.¹ He was appointed Member, Royal Victorian Order (M.V.O.) in 1945.¹ He was a civil servant.¹ He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1957.¹ He held the office of Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1962.¹ He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1963.¹ He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.)¹ He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1973.¹ He was created Baron Armstrong of Sanderstead, of the City of Westminster [U.K. Life Peer] on 29 January 1975.² He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.¹
