Lady Elizabeth Hamilton1

Lady Elizabeth Hamilton was born on 26 January 1753.1,3 She was the daughter of James Hamilton, 6th Duke of Hamilton and Elizabeth Gunning, Baroness Hamilton of Hameldon.1 She married Edward Smith-Stanley, 12th Earl of Derby, son of Rt. Hon. James Smith-Stanley and Lucy Smith, on 23 June 1774 at Argyll House, Great Argyll Street, St. James’s, London, EnglandG.3 She died on 14 March 1797 at age 44.1
From 23 June 1774, her married name became Smith-Stanley.3 After her marriage, Lady Elizabeth Hamilton was styled as Countess of Derby on 22 February 1776. She and John Frederick Sackville, 3rd Duke of Dorset were associated in 1778.4

Edward Smith-Stanley, 12th Earl of Derby was born on 12 September 1752.1 He was the son of Rt. Hon. James Smith-Stanley and Lucy Smith.3 He married, firstly, Lady Elizabeth Hamilton, daughter of James Hamilton, 6th Duke of Hamilton and Elizabeth Gunning, Baroness Hamilton of Hameldon, on 23 June 1774 at Argyll House, Great Argyll Street, St. James’s, London, EnglandG.1 He married, secondly, Eliza Farren, daughter of George Farren, on 1 May 1797.3 He died on 21 October 1834 at age 82.3
He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.3 He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG, in 1773 with a Master of Arts (M.A.)3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Lancashire between 1774 and 1776.3 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire between 1776 and 1834.3 He succeeded as the 12th Earl of Derby [E., 1485] on 22 February 1776.4 He succeeded as the 6th Baronet Stanley, of Bickerstaffe, co. Lancs [E., 1627] on 22 February 1776.3 He gained the rank of Colonel in 1779.3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1783.3 He held the office of Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in 1783.3 He held the office of Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster from 1806 to 1807.3 He held the office of Vice-Admiral of Lancashire between 1809 and 1831.3
