     Roderick Norman MacLean was born on 2 July 1808.1 He was the son of John Maclean, 13th of Boreray and Jessie Macleod.1 He married Flora Anne Gilbert, daughter of Lt.-Gen. Sir Walter Raleigh Gilbert, 1st Bt. and Isabella Rose Ross, on 20 June 1844 at Fort William, Bengal, India.1 He died on 8 November 1845 at age 37, at sea, on board H.E.I.C. Steamer Enterprise off Cape Comorin, India.1
     He gained the rank of Captain in the Honourable East India Company Service.1
