     He was a civil engineer.¹ He held the office of Member of the Glasgow Town Council in 1867.¹ He was Magistrate between 1879 and 1883.¹ He held the office of Lord Provost of Glasgow between 1883 and 1886.¹ He was appointed Knight in 1888.¹ He was chairman of the British and African Royal Mail Steamship Company.¹
