Charles Hamilton, 12th of Fairholm was born on 30 April 1715.2 He was the son of John Hamilton, 11th of Fairholm and Margaret Roberton.2 He married Jacobina Stuart, daughter of Sir James Stuart of Coltness, in 1766.2 He died on 15 May 1776 at age 61.2
He held the office of Burgess of Lanarkshire in 1740.2 He gained the rank of Ensign in 1745 in the King’s Regiment of Foot, against Jacobites.2 From 1747 to 1748 he fought in the Low Countries, and was wounded.2 He was Brigade Major and Judge Advocate of the Forces in Guadeloupe in 1759.2 He held the office of Lieutenant-Governor of Fort George, Guadeloupe in 1762.2 He was Burgess and Guild Brother of Glasgow in 1767.2
