     He was an adventurer, artist and newspaper correspondent in New Zealand, Australia, California, Mexico and the Mosquito Coast.² He fought in the New Zealand Wars, where he was mentioned in despatches.²

     Emelia Ross Bell was born in 1823.¹ She was the daughter of James Stanislaus Bell.² She married Major Gustavus Ferdinand von Tempsky, son of Julius Louis von Tempsky and Karoline Henriette Friederike Wilhelmine von Studnitz, on 9 July 1855 at Bluefields, Nicaragua^G.² She died in October 1900 at Hawkes Bay, New Zealand^G.¹
     From 9 July 1855, her married name became von Tempsky.¹
