He was with the Arctic Expedition between 1875 and 1876.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1897.1 He fought in the Benin Expedition in 1897, as Chief of Staff, and was mentioned in despatches.1 He was Commander-in-Chief of the Cape of Good Hope Station between 1908 and 1910.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1910.1 He held the office of Second Sea Lord in 1911.1 He was Commander-in-Chief of the Plymouth Station between 1913 and 1916.1
