Derek Oliver Berg1
He was a Radiation Oncologist. Surgeon in Papua New Guinea after marriage.
The March 2006 newsletter of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists, Inside News, featured Derek Berg on its front cover and the following item on page 6:
Dr Derek Berg: Surgeon, Radiation Oncologist and Author
Over the years the Trainor/Owen Archives Collection, or the College Archives as it is affectionately known, is a combined library, museum and archives relating to the history of radiology, unique in Australia. A few months ago the College Archives was given an autobiography entitled “My Paper Trail” which was written by Dr Derek Berg, who is now a retired Surgeon and Radiation Oncologist who has been a member of our College since the early 80s and is also a long standing member of the Australian, English and American College of Surgeons. “My Paper Trail is a 378pp, hardback, with many illistrations and was self published in 2005. Being a keen medical historian who enjoys research Dr Berg’s autobiography begins at early childhood in Hong Kong and China and its ensuing story is described as ‘the story of one man’s struggle to become a surgeon and then of a surgeon’s life in country Australia, of short periods of intense work in Vietnam and Darwin and then of six years of life as a senior surgeon in PNG.’ Dr Berg later acted on his interest in cancer by returning to Australia where he retrained to become a Radiation Oncologist. In 1998, after forty-five years of practicing medicine he retired as Director of the Department of Radiation Oncology at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney. “My Paper Trail” was written for his children, who are a major part of his story and his grandchildren whom he hopes find it to be of interest.3 He graduated from University of Sydney, Sydney, New South Wales, AustraliaG, in 1953 with a Bachelor of Medicine (M.B.) and Bachelor of Surgery.4 He lived in 1976 at Lae, Papua New GuineaG.1
