He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for County Antrim in 1639.2 He held the office of Governor of Carrickfergus.2 He was created 1st Earl of Donegall [Ireland] on 30 March 1647, with a special remainder to his father’s male descendants.1 He succeeded as the 2nd Viscount Chichester of Carrickfergus, co. Antrim [I., 1625] on 8 July 1648.1 He succeeded as the 2nd Baron Chichester of Belfast, co. Antrim [I., 1625] on 8 July 1648.1 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.3

Catherine Stanhope was the daughter of John Stanhope, 1st Baron Stanhope of Harrington and Margaret MacWilliams.1 She married Robert Cholmondeley, 1st and last Earl of Leinster, son of Sir Hugh Cholmondeley and Mary Holford.1 She died on 15 June 1657 at Cholmondeley, Cheshire, EnglandG.1 She was buried on 3 July 1657 at Malpas, Cheshire, EnglandG.1
Her married name became Cholmondeley.1 After her marriage, Hon. Catherine Stanhope was styled as Countess of Leinster on 5 March 1645/46.
