     In 1772 he was engaged to Elizabeth Anne Linley (was was only 16), but broke it off when she told him that “she could never be happy as his wife”. She subsequently eloped with a young playwright, Richard Brinsley Sheridan.¹

     Katherine Long was born in 1717 at Wiltshire, England^G.¹ She was the daughter of Thomas Long and Mary Abbott.¹ She died on 29 January 1814 at South Wraxall, Wiltshire, England^G, unmarried.¹ She was buried at Whaddon, Wiltshire, England^G.¹ Her will was proven (by probate) on 20 January 1814.¹
