George Romualdo Juarez1
When he was a child of 8, the Southern Pacific Railroad came to Santa Barbara, and he was fascinated, spending much of his time at the roundhouse. He started running errands for the office, taught himself morse code, and in his early 20’s, he was offered a position as a bilingual dispatcher for the railroad in Mexico. Over the years, he advanced steadily, and was appointed chairman of pullman service for all of Mexico. In addition, he inaugurated and managed the dining car concession (known as ‘Systema Juarez’) for the railroad. He was also very involved in politics. Very dissatisfied with the regime of Porfirio Diaz, he joined with a group of supporters to replace him with Carranza, a personal friend of his. He died of complications of lifelong diabetes, and of the influenza epidemic of 1918. (Wilson: From Mission to Majesty.)1
